Halloween-Esque Teas.

pumpkin chai

One of my habits is that when I get tea, I want to drink them all immediately. There is no way I could drink all of those teas right away, but I had two this morning and I’m drinking one now. After I ate my breakfast, I slowly sipped Pumpkin Chai. I could taste the cloves right away as well as a little bit of the caramel. The caramel is usually never strong tasting in any of the teas that I have had, but as long as there’s a hint of it there, I’m happy. I found that this tea wasn’t very strong, which is good, but it wasn’t strong enough in my opinion. It’s a very light tasting tea that is far from the Tazo Chai Tea, which has a stronger taste to it. Pumpkin Chai isn’t bad, it’s actually quite good! I just prefer certain teas to taste a certain way.

I could definitely taste the cinnamon and cloves with a hint of caramel. I couldn’t taste the pumpkin or the carrot, I think the pumpkin candies and the caramel actually help lighten the tea so it’s not so overpowering like some other chai teas that I have tasted (from the grocery store).

Whenever I try new tea, I always use honey or sugar with nothing else added to it. This allows me to get a full range of all the flavors in the tea before I decide if I want to add something else in it. For example, with this tea, I might add a touch bit more cinnamon in it next time and I would prefer it in a latte. I think that this tea would be best as a latte rather than just a tea on its own. There’s just something about frothy milk that changes the flavor completely and this is definitely a tea to try as a latte. All in all, if I could give this a rating out of ten, I’d probably give it as a 6. It’s not a tea that I’m in love with, but it’s definitely a nice change from the same old, same old. It’s one of those specialty teas that I would definitely love to see David bring back every year for the season.

If you’re not a fan of strong clove-tasting teas, then this is one that you should try. It’s not overpowering at all, but light thanks to the pumpkin candies and the caramel!

peanut butter cup

The second tea I had this morning was Peanut Butter Cup. This tea smells pretty darn delicious. It smells exactly like a peanut butter cup! But does it measure up to the mouth-watering taste of a peanut butter cup? Yes and no. It tastes like a peanut butter cup without all the sugar. In better words, it’s a healthy version of a peanut butter cup. That’s not to say that it tastes “bad” like a lot of other healthier options out there. It tastes great, the best part is that you can adjust the sweetness level yourself! You can’t do that with a real peanut butter cup! It’s a bonus! I like that it tastes similar to the delectable chocolate without the calories and that I can adjust the sweetness myself. The “peanutty” flavor is definitely present, you can taste it right away. The surprising part is that it is…*gasp* actually PEANUT FREE! Yes, even David went peanut free! It’s amazing how the tea tastes like peanuts, yet it’s made with almonds, chocolate, cocoa, safflower, and even bits of apple!

I’m a little undecided about trying this tea as a latte, but perhaps it will taste good! I might try it later on sometime, but for now, it’s amazing just the way it is! On a scale of 1-10, I’d probably give this tea an 8. I’m not completely in love with it, but I could definitely drink this all year round. It would satisfy my craving of chocolate…in the mornings. At night, well, that’s a different story…

The third tea that I tried today was Cranberry Orange Muffin. To be honest, I was really put off by the smell. I’m not sure what it is about it, but there’s just something that didn’t smell appealing to me. However, after steeping the tea and putting some honey in it, it’s not that bad. I can taste the cranberry, cinnamon, and orange peel, but I find that the orange peel’s flavor really overpowers everything else. Perhaps it’s only this cup of tea that I made, maybe if I make it again it’ll taste different; however, I find that the other flavors are lost as soon as I swallow. My tongue seems to absorb the orange peel flavor more than the other flavors, which is really sad, because this tea had so much potential. When it was in the bag it didn’t smell so great, but when it was steeping it smells exactly like a muffin that my mouth was watering. The mixture of cranberries with cinnamon and the touch of orange peel wafting in the air…There’s also dandelion root, pineapple, mango, beet sugar, orange pieces, and hibiscus.

If you’ve read all my other posts about tea, you’ll know that I adore hibiscus. It’s sour and packs a really hard punch in some teas (Queen of Tarts to name one), but I adore the flavor and that sour kick, especially in the morning! It’s like a cold shower when you’re tired, but for your mouth. “HELLO! Time to WAKE UP!” I’m normally not a fan of citrus teas, which might be why I’m not really too keen on this one, but it really does smell delicious! On the scale, I’d probably give this one a 4.5. Good smell (while steeping), good combination of ingredients, but my poor tongue does not like being left with the orange peel taste in my mouth.

Isn’t it funny how we all taste different things? Some people will probably LOVE this tea, others not so much. If you love citrus tea and like the taste of oranges, then this might be something that you would like! You never know if you’ll like something until you try it!

Happy steeping!

A Feel Good Tea That Tastes Like Apple Cider (Without the Calories! Shh!)

Now that fall is on it’s way, it’s time to start searching for my fall and winter teas to stock up on like a squirrel caching their food supply. The cold weather always means I’m spending money on tea to keep myself warm at home and at work, so there should be no surprise that I ordered a bunch of new tea from David’s Tea. I ordered 250 grams of Mint to Be (which I already reviewed here), Spiced Apple, and The Fall Collection (which is a box that consists of 5 teas: Cranberry Orange Muffin, Pumpkin Chai, Honeycrisp Apple, Peanut Butter Cup, Nutty by Nature, and 20 tea filters).

I haven’t tried the new Tea Matchmaker on the David’s Tea website yet, but I usually never go by what mood I’m in, it’s usually what I’m craving or, if I have NO idea what I’m craving, I’ll usually open all my tea and sniff them until I find one that feels “right” for the moment. It also depends on what time of day it is. If it’s after work, I stay away from all caffeinated tea and go with the herbals, like right now.

Since the leaves are turning brilliant shades of yellows, oranges, and reds, I have been craving the sweet comfort of spiced apple cider without the calories. I love apple cider, which I only allow myself to have when I am craving it. However, I don’t always want to have lots of sugar in my diet so this Spiced Apple tea seemed like the perfect bet for me.

When I opened the package, I was hit with the spices of cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. I knew that I wanted this tea right now! Now, I’m sitting at the computer with my cup of Spiced Apple tea, writing this review. The tea isn’t sweet, but it’s packed with enough flavor to satisfy my craving. I like that I can add my own sweetness with sugar or honey and it brings out more flavor in the tea. The cloves and star anise don’t overpower the tea at all, it actually blends well with the other ingredients: apples, figs, chicory, cardamom, and black pepper. The cinnamon and black pepper give it a small kick as an after taste, but that just makes it more enjoyable. The website says it’s like a “hug in a cup,” which I agree with, but I also feel like it’s a cuddle fest on a rainy/snowy day in front of the fireplace. Ahhh, relaxing with your significant other on the couch, cuddled under a blanket and watching the snow fall or listening to the rain…Ahhh…That’s how amazing this tea is! There’s a punch, but not too extreme, and it’s not too sweet for my taste. It’s perfect. This is a tea that I’m definitely going to order more of next month, since I’ll probably be drinking this nearly every day from now now. Hah.

Another great tea by David’s Tea. Thank you! I was not disappointed at all! I highly recommend this tea if you are looking for something similar to apple cider, without the calories! Happy steeping.
